Head Street Mural - March 2026

In Spring 2025, a group of San Franciscans, led by the Merced Extension Triangle Neighborhood Association (METNA), came to us with a plan to revitalize an overlooked stretch of Alemany Boulevard.

The project in mind? A vibrantly colored mural painted on a Public Works’ retaining wall at Head Street and Alemany Boulevard, including an adjacent private retaining wall.

With funding assistance from District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar’s participatory budgeting process, METNA was able to collaborate with renowned San Francisco-based artist Mike Ritch on a stunning, nature-inspired design for the mural.

The project was completed in December 2025.

Now, a menagerie of butterflies, foxes, snakes, birds and honeybees adorns this previously drab retaining wall.

Public Works joined forces with local community groups to beautify a stretch of sidewalk in front of Miraloma Elementary School with a stunning mural.

A group of Public Works employees takes you on a tour of their favorite public staircases in the City. Is there one in your neighborhood you’d like to brighten up?
